Milita's Monday

Hi everyone, it's time for another Milita's Monday!

I was laying here enjoying my favorite show, Meerkat Manor, when the Mom decided to rudely interrupt and take photos of me.

I have been doing pretty well since my last post.  I finished up all of my antibiotic (Baytril).  The Mom told me all I had to take were three more Prednisolone and I would be done, but she lied!

She told me I was all done with my medication last Sunday, so how come the humans are still shoving those icky chicken liver tablets in my mouth every other day?

The Mom here: Milita finished up her course of antibiotics, and we tried to titrate her off the Prednisolone as instructed, but then my friend and I both thought we heard Lita getting a little crackly again in her breathing.  So I asked the vet what she wanted me to do, and she told me to keep giving Lita Prednisolone every other day for now.

Milita will be going back to the vet tomorrow.  They will listen to her lungs and possibly take another chest x-ray.  I think we are all leaning toward the possible diagnosis of asthma for her.

I am thinking about trying Prednisolone in a transdermal gel for Milita if she needs to continue taking it.  She hates pills, though she tolerates the chicken liver Prednisolone.  When I asked our vet tech about the gel, though, she said it tends to not be as effective as pills.  Can anyone shed any light on this for us?

  1. We're glad Milita is feeling better. We don't have any experience with transdermal gels, but it sounds like a good option.

  2. Thank heaven she is feeling better! Admiral used ear gel but she had hyperthyroid.

  3. Purrs to you sweet Lita, we hope all is okay and that asthma isn't a problem. We take pills easily, but for asthma Gracie uses an inhaler.

  6. When Sparkle was sick, pills always seemed more effective than transdermal dosages... but then, she hated the transdermal cream!

  7. Aw Milita! I hope you don't have asthma! Unfortunately, I don't have any experience with transdermal pred.

  8. Looking good sweetie!
Ya know, whenever someone says to me "not as effective" I have to ask, yeah, but is it effective 'enough'? If she has asthma and it's not bad enough for a pill a day, then not as effective might be better than shoving pills.. that's just my thought, but I'm no vet and I don't have any experience with kitty asthma or transdermal things.. Praying and purring for the best!!

  10. Meerkat Manor is one of the best shows ever!

I've used transdermal gels for hyperthyroidism before, and Tara had a couple others as a gel too. Have you ever considered having it compounded into a liquid?

  11. I hope Lita feels better soon. I am sorry I have no experience with prednisone as a gel, but that sounds like a good idea.

  12. From the research the head peep did, the transdermal gels don't seem to be as effective a delivery system for anything. She looked into it for hyperthyroid medication a few years ago and it was always an "only if your cat really, really can't do the pills" thing.

  13. We're glad Lita is getting better! We don't know anything about the transdermal gels. Isabella has asthma so is on an inhaler every day.

  14. We sure hope and purr that the right diagnoses will be made, then the medication program can be addressed. Transdermal medication does work if its applied to thin skin...peeps that would be the inside of forearm, or suchlike.

Purring fur the well being of Milita.

  15. Cody takes Pred too when he has flare-ups but has never been offered it in gel form. Probably because he willingly takes his meds....I would think they would try to lick the gel? I could be wrong.

  16. Glad Milita is doing better. Sorry to hear that everything isn't completely cleared up yet. Thanks for the update - we'll continue purring and praying for her!
Oh, and we don't know anything about transdermal gels, so we can't shed any light onto the situation. :(

  17. Flynn is very good for his pills, but when we were going on holiday I crushed the Prednisalone and mixed with 2cc of water and gave it by syringe to make it easier for his holiday aunties. The vet suggested it and said it was just as effective. Maybe that would be easier for you and Milita.
