Jewel's Journey

Tomorrow is Jewel's birthday.  She would have been 18 years old.  For today's Jewel's Journey, I thought I'd share a few different memories.

I was going through my old blog entries about Jewel and found a few memories I had forgotten.

As many of you know, Jewel was a fighter when it came to her chronic renal failure.  She was very stubborn, and I believe this stubbornness helped her live longer.  It also made for some interesting treatment sessions.

I ran across the post I did about Jewel's first subcutaneous fluid treatment at home.  I vaguely remember how interesting that whole process was.  I had a couple of friends come over to help me with her.  They pet her while I struggled to get her fluids into her.  Jewel kept trying to run off.  She kept crying, which really upset Carmine, so he started crying, too.  In the end, Jewel was so upset with the whole process, she bit my arm.

Fortunately for all of us, each treatment got a little easier.  Jewel got to the point where she would just lay down on her comfy kitty pad and let me give her the fluids.  She understood that she would get lots of treats afterward, and I believe she learned that the fluids helped her feel better.

Many of you also know how sensitive Carmine is.  He wants to take care of everyone in the house, and it affects him a lot when someone isn't doing well.  He really loved Jewel.  Here, you can see him all snuggled up with Jewel.  Jewel didn't really appreciate other cats, but she (mostly) tolerated Carmine checking on her many times a day, supervising her fluid treatments, and laying near her when she didn't feel well.  I believe she still visits him sometimes.

Jewel was a character.  She was intelligent, talkative, demanding, stubborn, and loving.  I love how she'd come up behind my office chair when I was working and demand I feed her treats NOW.  You always knew what she wanted because she'd make sure you knew.

She enjoyed blackmailing me for bites of cheeseburger at the Wendy's after our vet trips.  She liked traveling around.  She got to go to Wendy's, Subway, and Wal-Mart.  She always got a lot of compliments from people on the bus who saw her in her carrier.  She was a stunning cat.

We will be having a little celebration on Saturday with a few friends for Jewel.  We'll be grilling hot dogs - one of Jewel's favorite foods.  There will also be Cheetos (which she loved) and lemon cake.  Jewel was a very special kitty, and I know I will always miss her.  I consider myself lucky to have met her and to have had the chance to rescue her.

Please visit us tomorrow for a special giveaway in Jewel's honor.
