Reflections on the Nature of Friendship: Book Review

Reflections on the Nature of Friendship

About the Book:
Dr. Daniel Cantor Yalowitz, psychologist and world-traveler, takes a deep look at friendship in this book, exploring what humans need and bring to their relationships. The book explores what connects people and what makes friendships work and thrive.

Chapters in the book cover pertinent topics, such as intimacy, boundaries, conflict, and longing and belonging. The author includes three case studies of primary friendships in his own life.

My Thoughts: I was excited to read this as, human friendships can be pretty complicated! I had expected to learn new and perhaps more effective ways of doing things in my relationships with my human friends.

The book, though, was definitely not what I had expected. It is very analytical, in my opinion.

For instance, before I read the chaper on boundaries, I had expected the author to not only define boundaries but also to share with readers how to set and implement healthy boundaries in friendships. There were definitions of different types of boundaries people have, such as walls, fences, gates, doors, etc. in this book. However, I found the explanations of these different types of boundaries rather vague. I think some clear, specific examples would have helped me understand the differences between the different types of boundaries he defines. I was disappointed that there were no tips or guidance on how to go about setting and maintaining healthy boundaries in friendships.

The author did a great job of explaining our innate desire to connect with others, our desire to belong, and the importance of knowing oneself.

The author includes thought-provoking quotes and poetry throughout the book, which I really enjoyed.

Overall, though the book was more analytical and academic than I had expected, it does offer some valuable insights and thought-provoking questions.
