Hi everyone, it's the Mom today with some news about Tylan.
Tylan hasn't been feeling good for a little while now. He had blood work done at the beginning of April, and when his white blood cell count came back high, our vet decided it would be a good idea to treat him with Orbax in case he had a kidney infection. His kidney numbers were also up a little from the previous month.
Unfortunately, the Orbax seemed to make Tylan feel worse. He also seemed to have some kind of allergic reaction to it - he got these sores on his neck from where he was scratching himself so much. Tylan has never had skin issues, so the vet and I decided it was like an allergic reaction to the antibiotic.
In any case, the medication didn't seem to help him.
About a week or so ago, Tylan slowed down considerably on his food intake. Getting canned food into him had become a bit of a challenge, so I stopped offering kidney canned food and started offering regular cat food. Our vet and I decided it is more important that he eat than he eat kidney food.
Fortunately, Tylan really liked the kidney kibble, so i kept feeding that to him. Unfortunately, within the past few days, he has shown less interest in kibble, too, whether it be kidney kibble or regular (I'm mixing them because we were transitioning over to the kidney food from the regular kibble).
He had his labs done again on Tuesday. He has been vocalizing a lot more at home and hiding more. He clearly does not feel good. He wants my lap a lot, which he only wants when he feels crummy.
His results came back today, and his numbers are pretty bad - near where they were when he was hospitalized in January. For now, the vet and I have decided to try to increase his subcutaneous fluids dose (he gets them daily) and to increase his aluminum hydroxide (liquid PhosBind essentially).
He has a consult with an Internal Medicine specialist next Tuesday, but it is not looking so good for him. He is already on everything they use to treat kidney disease - Elura, zofran, cerenia, and subcutaneous fluids. Aluminum hydroxide. Prednisolone for his stomatitis, asthma, and arthritis. Solensia and buprenorphine for his arthritis.
I am heartbroken, and our vet and I both worry he may not make it to his IM consult. We are stumped. I don't thin there IS anything left we can do. It is tragic. I'm just trying to keep him happy and comfortable until he says it's time. If, by some miracle, his kidney values improve, I'll be forever thankful, but realistically, they probably won't.
I'm so sorry and sad for you. Its so hard when we see our furbabies suffering.
ReplyDeleteGive him tons of love and even more from us.
