Refractory Stomatitis is Challenging to Treat: Stem Cell Therapy Saved My Cat's Life

Tylan
 My seal-point Siamese, Tylan.

Two weeks after I adopted my seal-point Siamese, Tylan, our vet took one look in his mouth and said, “He has stomatitis.” Little did I know that this would be one of the hardest battles I'd ever help a cat fight.

What is Stomatitis?

Feline Chronic Gingivostomatits (FCGS), commonly known as stomatitis, is a chronic condition that results from severe mouth tissue inflammation. According to Dr. Kate O'Hare, stomatitis affects 0.7-4% of cats.

Two types of stomatitis are recognized based on which part of the mouth is inflamed. The first form of the condition is characterized by inflammation that starts in the gums and the tissues surrounding the teeth. The second form is characterized by inflammation in the back of the mouth where the upper and lower jaws meet. This form may be more difficult to treat.

Cats of any breed and age can be affected by stomatitis. The most prominent symptom of the condition is severe mouth pain. Your cat may show his pain in a number of ways, including:

  • Pawing at his mouth.
  • Rubbing his face against furniture.
  • Acting aggressively if you try to touch his mouth or offer food.
  • Crying while eating, beginning to eat when he's offered a meal but stopping suddenly, or refusing to eat at all.
  • Hiding under furniture.

A cat with FCGS may also have an unkempt coat because he finds it too painful to groom himself. Cats with stomatitis may also have foul-smelling breath and drool. The drool may contain blood. A cat with FGCS may lose weight if he finds it too painful to eat. The affected parts of a cat's mouth will usually be bright red and bleed easily.

Mancat Monday

Hi everyone, it's Tylan.

We apologize we have not been around much at all lately. The Mom lady has been trying to make that green stuff - we are sure your humans can relate!

Those of us who follow us on Facebook will not be surprised to hear some of this news. I have something called "stomatitis." It makes my mouth very, very painful. I love to eat, but when my mouth hurts so bad, I don't eat much or anything at all.

Before the Mom lady took me home, all but my two bottom canines were pulled. It improved my health some. Before they pulled my teeth, I didn't even want anyone to PET me. I love tummy rubs so the Mom lady says she cannot even imagine how much pain I must have been in.

Unfortunately, pulling most of my teeth did not cure me.

I have really bad ulcers in my throat. They are very, very painful some days. On my bad pain days, I get some medicine. The Mom lady used to give it to me in my mouth, and I hated that because it hurt! So she talked to the vet, and they switched me over to something she can give me in an injection now, and I actually like that a lot better!!

Mancat Monday

Tylan enjoying his heated bed.

Hi everyone, it's Tylan today

The Mom lady says you all have been waiting for an update about me, so I thought Mancat Monday was a good time to give one.

Last Wednesday, I went to see the vet guy. I LOVE the vet and the vet techs!! But I HATE getting there. I sing the song of my people loudly the whole way there and back. But once I m at the vet, I come right out o my carrier and flop on the table or the floor and demand they pet my tummy!

I weighed in at 9.06 pounds this time. The Mom lady and the vet guy think that is a perfect weight for me. But I love food so much, the Mom lady is going to have a hard time keeping me from gaining more weight, MOL!

I will turn it over to the Mom lady so she can tell you all the technical stuffs. Then I'll be back!
