Cooper: A Rescue Dog's Tale Helps Pets in Need

Cooper: A Rescue Dog's Tale book cover image
Cooper: A Rescue Dog's Tale created by Timothy T. Civick and James S. Martinez is a coloring and activity book that helps educate people on how they can help in the rescue of pets.  The book is based on a true story.

Gina Dial, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for John Paul Pet, wanted to rescue Cooper, a one-and-a-half year-old Australian Shepherd.  She utilized her social media network in order to help rescue Cooper.  Once she realized how social media can aid pets in need, she inspired John Paul Pet to create the Passionate Animal Lovers (PALS) program.  The PALS program encourages people to join their state's respective Facebook page and share lost and found pets as well as pets needing forever homes.  You can find your stat'e PALS Facebook page HERE.  For every person who joins the PALS Facebook group, John Paul Pet will donate $1 to the Morris Animal Foundation, up to $5,000.

Cooper's story resonates with people because it is all too common.  Through no fault of his own, Cooper was adopted, returned, placed with an elderly person who became unable to care for him, and spent time in a foster home before finding his forever home.  Millions of other animal companions enter shelters each year.  In fact, according to the ASPCA, approximately 3.9 million dogs and 3.4 million cats enter shelters annually in the United States.  Sadly, approximately 2.7 million pets in shelters are euthanized each year.  These statistics really break my heart.

John Paul Pet understands the importance of teaching children about animal rescue at an early age.  They sought a way to make Cooper's story fun as well as educational for kids.  To make their idea a reality, John Paul Pet reached out to James S. Martinez at Helping Tales Publishers.

Cooper: A Rescue Dog's Tale tells Cooper's story from beginning to end, with him finding a forever home in Bulverde, Texas with two other dogs, thanks to Dial's social media outreach efforts.  In a press release, Dial said, "This experience was a reminder that it only takes a phone call, a Facebook posting, telling a friend, or sharing a story with a stranger.  I hope this inspires all of us to stop and think twice when we see a pet in need.  One little thing could mean the difference between life and death for a homeless pet."

Not only does Cooper: A Rescue Dog's Tale educate children about the importance of pet adoption, it also helps shelter pets.  Ten percent of the profits from book sales go to animal rescues and shelters across the country.

With its beautiful illustrations and rhyming story, Cooper: A Rescue Dog's Tale is the perfect book for kids or adults who are kids at heart!

You can purchase the book on Amazon for $6.99.  Animal rescues and shelters interested in purchasing the book at a discount for resale can contact Helping Tales Publishers.

About John Paul Pet: John Paul DeJoria, co-founder of John Paul Mitchell Systems, banned animal testing for his products 30 years ago, revolutionizing the salon industry.  John Paul's expertise in skin and hair care led to research in new standards for pet grooming, which led to the creation of John Paul Pet products.  The company supports programs benefiting animals, such as Best Friends Animal Society, the California Wildlife Association, PAWS, Morris Animal Foundation, and the Humane Society of the United States.

  1. I love how much John Paul Pet does to help animals. I haven't heard about the PALS Facebook page, but will definitely find and like my state's page.

This book sounds like a great resource and would be a great resource for schools to have in kindergarten classrooms.

  4. Ugh, those statistics break my heart, too. I'm glad that social media can help pets in need, though. And that's wonderful that Paul Mitchell doesn't test on animals! This looks like such a cute little book. So glad it worked out for Cooper in the end!

  21. What a wonderful little book to help children see the value of all animals. Seems PA still needs someone to be the FB organizer and we will ask Dad as soon as he retires if we can do this for pets in PA
    Thanks so much
