It's a Fuzzy Friday with Carmine

Carmine hangs out on my bed.
Hi everyone, it's mes, Carmine!  Did yous miss mes?

The Mom has been typing a lot at the computer, but clearly hers hasn't been helping mes post on our bloggie!  Hers has been writing things for other peoples to try to keep up with the cost of all of our medicines now that Lita takes three medicines for asthma.  But hers found some time to help mes post here tonight - aren't yous glad?

At my last visit to the vet, mes had losted more weight.  In fact, mes losted 12 ounces, which alarmed the Mom and the vet.  Theys stole my blood and theys think mes might has Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency, whatever that means!  All mes knows is that since then, mes has been poked a bunch of times at home, and mes doesn't like it.

The Mom here.  Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency occurs when a cat cannot absorb the nutrients from its food because he is lacking the pancreatic enzymes necessary for the job.  This can be a complication of chronic pancreatitis, so I would not be surprised if this is what Carmine has developed.  The vet and I agreed to try B12 injections at home to see if that would help him.  He had to receive the injections one per week for six week (hence all the pokes he mentioned).  Now we are down to an injection once a month.  I hate sticking him, but I hope it helps him maintain his weight.  He is also getting Prozyme on his food.  Anyway, back to Carmine...

Mes ams back.

Carmine hangs out in his cat tree.
As some of yous know, mes takes Cerenia for my tummy five days a week.  The vet says mes has to has two days off the Cerenia because it can cause tremors with continuous use.  The Mom noticed that mes ate less on the days mes did not get Cerenia, so hers asked the vet about trying to give mes something called Zofran on those days.  The Mom says it is another medicine for my tummy to help mes not feel nauseous.

And guess what?!  Mes eats MORE on the days mes gets the Zofran than on days mes gets Cerenia, MOL!!  Mes bugs the humans for food constantly on those days.  The Mom has sent our vet an email asking if it would be possible to switch mes over to the new medicine completely since mes does so well on it.  Wes will see what the vet says.  There is a rumor going around here that mes is going to visit hers soon, but mes thinks Lita is just trying to scare mes.

How is all of yous doing?  Mes has missed all of my friends!

  1. My human says she should ask our vets about Zofran. Binga takes Cerenia every now and again, but it is not as helpful as she would like.

  14. Connor has Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency and gets pancreatic enzymes (Epizyme) twice a day with his food. It gets mixed in his food and we have to wait 10 minutes before we give it to him so it can "predigest" the food. We started about 1.5 months ago. He has gained weight and appears less hungry, but his blood test results haven't shown much improvement. Our vet was going to consult with an internist and we'll see her this weekend to see what she wants us to do.

    Sending you many purrs Carmine!
