Do yous know what today is? It be Ginger Cat Appreciation Day!
In honor of this day, mes thought mes would share some cool facts about us orange cats!
- About 80% of ornage cats are handsome mancats like mes. Beautiful orange ladycats, like our friends Pansy and Tigger, account for 20% of the orange cat population.
- Scientists believe that the gene for orange coat coloring is located on the sex-linked X chromosome. Mancats only need to inherit ONE orange gene. A mancat like mes is born orange when we get the orange gene from our mothers. The mothers of orange mancats are orange, calico, or tortoiseshell.
There are fewer orange females because they need TWO orange genes in order to be born orange. Theys gets one from their mother, who must be orange, calico, or tortoiseshell and one from their father, who must be orange. - There is no solid orange cats. All orange kitties has a coat pattern - mackerel, classic, ticked, or spotted. Mes has a mackerel pattern on my coat. It makes mes look like a tiny tiger!
- Ginger kitties tend to get black freckles, like the ones on my nose! Everyone always comments about my freckles and how cute theys makes mes. Ginger kitties tend to get black freckles on their gums and around their lips and noses. These freckles are usually harmless, but the Mom says if yous notice any changes in coloring, yous should have your vet take a look at thems.
- Orange kitties differ in hue. The pigment, pheomelanin, is responsible for a ginger cat's orange coloring. Pheomelanin is the same pigment responsible for producing red hair in humans.
By the way, the Mom wrote an article about orange kitties for CANIDAE last year. It's called, "Do Orange Cats Have Unique Personalities?" Yous can read it if yous wants by clicking on the link. The Mom said it was a fun article to write!
What do yous love about orange kitties? Please tell mes in the comments!
Happy Ginger Cat Appreciation Day!

ReplyDeleteHappy ginger cat day! I love red cats. My Flame cat was the best red cat I ever met. Classic tabby with a bobtail. And I had a red and white boy that was my heart cat for 24 years. I'm a big fan of a red and white Persian that shows on the same circuit as me.
