Opt to Adopt: Coco

Coco

Cat Care Society, Lakewood, CO

Coco is a beautiful gray tabby with short hair.  She is approximately one and a half years old.  Coco is a little shy when you initially meet her, but she is friendly and affectionate.  Once she gets to know you, she just might choose to curl up in your lap.  She also enjoys an occasional play session.

At Coco's former home, she hid much of the time because the dog and children were a little too much for her.  She prefers a quiet home with no dogs or children residents.  She does get along with other kitties okay, though.

Coco is up-to-date with her vaccinations, spayed, and litterbox trained.  You can find her in the Green Room at Cat Care Society, located at 5787 W. 6th Avenue in Lakewood, CO.

Black Cat Appreciation Day

Today is Black Cat Appreciation Day!!

Did you know that black cats are less likely to get adopted from shelters than their more colorful friends?  We don't understand why; black kitties make wonderful companions!

To celebrate Black Cat Appreciation Day, we'd like to tell you about a few of our special friends at Cat Care Society in hopes that these wonderful black kitties will find the purrfect home.

Cairo

Whenever I visit Cat Care Society, I really enjoy spending time with Cairo.  She's a very sweet, beautiful black lady cat.  She enjoys being pet and brushed.  She also likes playing with toys when you drag them on the ground for her.

Cairo is 13 years young.  Her age qualifies her for the Perpet-U-Care program, which will pay for a portion of her medical care for the rest of her life.  She came to the shelter when her human passed away and would love to find another great home.  She is spayed, litter box trained, and up-to-date on her vaccinations.  You can find her in the upstairs hallway at the shelter.

Brietta

Brietta is a very sweet and friendly black lady cat.  She can be nervous at first, but once she gets to know you, she is very affectionate.  Sometimes she'll even sit in your lap.

Brietta is a special needs cat.  I know she has arthritis, but I'm not sure if she has any other medical conditions.  She is 13 years young and also qualifies for the Perpet-U-Care program.  She is already spayed, litter box trained, and up-to-date on her vaccinations.  You can also find her in the upstairs hallway at the shelter.

Tara

Tara is an affectionate medium hair black lady cat.  She is active and likes catnip and playing with toys.  She doesn't really enjoy being picked up, but she'll sit right next to you, and sometimes she'll even jump into your lap.

Tara is 14 years young, which means she qualifies for the Perpet-U-Care program.  She is spayed, litter box trained, and up-to-date on her vaccinations.  She prefers a home without dogs.  You can find her in the upstairs hallway at Cat Care Society.

Cat Care Society is located at 5787 W. 6th Avenue.

Cairo, Brietta, and Tara will make someone fantastic companions.  If you have room in your heart and home for any of these loving kitties, please visit or call the shelter to learn more about them.  You can visit Cat Care's website here.

Help Homeless Cats and Dogs Find New Forever Homes: ASPCA $100K Challenge

Fifty great dog and cat shelters have just started competing for more than $500,000 in grants from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) through this year's ASPCA Rachel Ray $100K Challenge.

The goal of the contest is for the competing shelters to get at least 300 more cats and dogs adopted this August, September, and October than were adopted in the same time-frame in 2011.  The grand prize of $100,000 will go to the shelter who is able to increase their adoption numbers the most from last year to this year.

In addition, the shelter who does the best job engaging the people in its community and the second place shelter will also receive $25,000 each from the ASPCA.  CatChannel also reports that shelters who do the best in each category will be eligible to receive grants worth $5.000 to $40,000.

Bert Troughton, vice president of community outreach for the ASPCA stated, "In this competition, everybody wins - especially the animals!"

Many of the participating organizations are holding events during the competition.  A few of the events taking place include:

  • City of Bloomington Animal Shelter: ASPCA $100K Kickoff Adopt-A-Thon. This event will take place from August 1-5 at the City of Bloomington Animal Shelter located at 3410 S. Walnut, Bloomington, IN 47401.  The shelter will be open extended hours and reducing adoption fees during this time.  The shelter will be open from noon to 7pm from Wednesday to Saturday and from 1 to 4pm on Sunday.  All dog adoption fees will be reduced to $40 per dog and all cat adoption fees will be waived!
  • Rainy Days at PHS: Located at 4022 Seaboard Court, Portsmouth, Virginia 23701, PHS will offer FREE adoptions from August 1 through October 31 on ANY DAY IT RAINS!!  As long as rain is falling when you begin your adoption process, you will have your cat or dog adoption fee waived.
  • Name Your Own Adoption Fee: Located at 171 Bel Marin Keys Blvd., Novato, California 94949, the Marin Humane Society wants to adopt out 1,200 cats and dogs during the months of August, September, and October.  During the entire month of August, the Marin Humane Society is allowing pet adopters to name their own adoption fees for cats and dogs!
  • "Priceless" Cat Adoption Special: HALO Animal Rescue, a no-kill shelter, is offering waived adoption fees for all adult cats from August 1 through October 31, 2012.  Any cat one year old or older is eligible for waived adoption fees during this time.  HALO Animal Rescue is located at 5231 N 35th Avenue, Phoenix, Arizona 85017.  You can also take advantage of the waived adoption fees on HALO Animal Rescue adult cats in Petco and PetSmart stores in the area.
  • Halloween Spooktacular: Halloween Spooktacular will be held by the Bay Area Humane Society, located at 1830 Radisson St., Green Bay, Wisconsin 54302.  From October 24 through October 31, 2012, the adoption fee on any cat or dog containing orange and/or black fur will be reduced by half.  This reduction will apply to any cat or dog of any age at the main shelter and to any cat or dog of any age at the PetSmart adoption center located on Pilgrim Way.
You can see a full list of the events shelters are using during the ASPCA Rachel Ray $100K Challenge by going here.  You can help homeless cats and dogs find good and loving forever homes by helping promote your local shelter's events. :)

Summer Open House at Independent Cat Society

Tonight, I was looking at cat sanctuaries and rescues in my home state, Indiana, and found the Independent Cat Society.  The Independent Cat Society is a no-kill cat shelter, which is something I really love.  It really breaks my heart when shelters euthanize animals for any reason.

If you live in the area, I would really encourage you to attend the Independent Cat Society's (ICS) summer open house on Saturday June 23 or Sunday June 24.  The open house will be taking place from 10am to 4pm on June 23 and from 1pm to 4pm on June 24.  The shelter is located on the northeast corner of US Highway 6 and County Line Road in Westville Indiana.

The 3 Old Cat Ladies Cafe will be open and offering refreshments for sale.  Additionally, birdhouses, catnip mats, home baked goods, garden cats, cat toys, T-shirts, plants for the garden and more will be available for purchase.

You can also check out the Rainbow Bridge Garden.  The garden's grand opening will also be taking place on June 23.

Of course, while you're there, you should visit all the adorable cats and kittens available for adoption at ICS. :)

The adoption fee for cats and kittens at ICS is $75 for the first cat and $25 for a second companion cat.  Each feline available for adoption has been spayed or neutered, has received a veterinary examination and gotten any medical care he or she needed, is up-to-date on all vaccinations, and has an identification tattoo or a microchip.  All felines have also received feline leukemia and FIV tests and treatment for worms, tics, and fleas.  You will also get a cardboard carrier, a subscription to the Independent Cat Society newsletter, and a free vet exam at any participating veterinarian within two weeks of adoption.

If you would like to learn more about the Independent Cat Society, their adoption process, or see their cats available for adoption, you can visit the organization's website here.

If you decide to go to this event, please let us know how it was!  This sounds like a good place for kitties to wait for forever homes.  May all the precious babies find them soon! :)

Hot Male Models Aim to Increase Pet Adoption

Found Animals, a Los Angeles- based non-profit organization, is releasing a 2012 calendar featuring male models holding cats. The calendar, entitled, "6 Packs / 9 Lives," is available in stores nationwide and was shot by Adam Bouska, celebrity photographer.

Found Animals created the calendar in order to promote animal adoption. All of the male models who were photographed are actual cat owners who adopted their furry friends as well.

A launch party is being held today, Saturday November 19 from 4-6pm at The Abbey in West Hollywood. The event is free and open to the public and will feature the male models from the calendar, shirtless male models who will participate in a catwalk walk-off, a signature gin cocktail called, "Cat on a Hot Gin," and celebrity photographer Adam Bouska.

Not only are the calendars available in stores nationwide, they are also available for purchase on-line here. All proceeds from the calendar sales will go toward low-cost spay and neuter programs in Los Angeles.

Found Animals is a non-profit organization that aims to increase pet adoption and supports animal welfare issues. If you would like more information, you may visit the Found Animals website.
