Jewel's Journeys

This is a new feature where we will share with you memories of our precious Jewel.  We hope you all enjoy hearing about her and helping us remember her.

When Jewel first started living with me (shortly after she was diagnosed with CRF), she enjoyed spending time with me on the couch when I watched television or wrote a letter to one of my snail mail penpals.

Jewel wasn't the kind of kitty who loved hugs like Milita does.  Rather, she showed her love by sticking close by her favorite people.

I was so touched when she started spending a lot of time near me.

Please help us win some awesome toys for Cat Care Society by voting for/admiring Jewel's photo in this contest!

There's still time to enter our giveaway!  You can enter it HERE.

(Almost) Wordless Wednesday

I've been trying to figure out ways we can honor our sweet Jewel.  Originally, I wanted to have a commentathon to make a monetary donation to Cat Care Society, as they helped us so incredibly much help Jewel through her journey with CRF.  But we haven't had any green papers to spare in a long long time.  So when I saw the contest to win $100 worth of Jackson Galaxy products, I thought it would be fantastic if we could win some things for Cat Care.

You can vote/admire Jewel's photo HERE to help us get into the top 10 where our photo will be judged for a chance to win!  We appreciate votes and shares very much!

A Competition for the Most Pet-Friendly Workplace

Nestlé Purina PetCare is currently accepting nominations for the Purina Pets at Work contest.  The company wants to reward the nation's most pet-friendly company.  Nominations are being accepted until January 15, 2013.

Purina will reward the most pet-friendly company in the United States with $5,000 in pet-related materials.  It will also donate $10,000 to a local pet charity.  John O'Hurley will present the winning company with the award.

According to CatChannel, in a study published in the International Journal of Workplace Health Management in March 2012, it was discovered that employees who brought their dogs to work with them experienced more job satisfaction and less stress than those who didn't.  I'd like to add that I've brought my cat to work with me in the past, and I was much more content than on days I didn't bring her to work (I only had Milita at the time).

To nominate your company as the most pet-friendly, you must write an essay describing how pets make a positive difference in the workplace and why your day is better for you when you have your pet at work.  You must also provide three to five photos showing that your workplace is pet-friendly, and describe your company's Pets at Work program.

The winner will be announced sometime in Spring.

You can learn more about the contest by visiting Purina's website.

Biggest Losers Contest Winners

A while back I posted about the Biggest Losers Contest (in Purrfect Pets) where owners of obese cats were encouraged to help them lose weight on a veterinary approved diet. The results and winners of the contest were recently published in the May edition of CAT FANCY magazine.

The first place winner is Pumpkin, a 13-year-old cat who weighed 30 pounds before he began his weight-loss journey. At 30 pounds, Pumpkin's owners, Kathryn Maxwell and Elizabeth Bible, said he didn't move anymore than he had to. They did not force him to exercise, but began to feed him a recommended amount of weight management cat food every morning and evening. He began his weight loss journey in July 2007, and by January 2009, he weighed 14 pounds. His owners say he now plays and runs with the other cats, is much happier, and can groom his entire body.

The second place winner in the Biggest Losers Contest is Serendipity, a nine-year-old cat, who weighed 23 pounds when he began his weight-loss journey. His owner, Marian Kaplan, gives him a little less than 1/8 cup of diabetes food every morning. She tosses it piece by piece down the hall to give Serendipity some exercise and to keep him from snarfing his food, then stealing the other cats' food. In mid-morning, Serendipity receives four dental treats, tossed as well. Ten pieces of diabetic food are then tossed to him mid-day. In late afternoon, he is served 1/4 of a small can of wet cat food in a bowl with three posts, which makes him work for his food. Finally, before bed, he gets 10 more pieces of diabetic food tossed to him.

Serendipity now weighs 11 pounds.

The third place winner in this contest is Baron, an eight-year-old cat who weighed 22 pounds at the beginning of his weight-loss journey. Baron's owner, Nan Schaeffer said when Baron was rescued he was malnourished and gained weight too quickly, which led to him becoming obese. Baron has been eating four controlled meals each day and must jump up to his table in order to eat them. Baron now weighs 13 pounds, and enjoys running and playing.
