Fountains Encourage Cats to Drink More Water: #PetHydrationMonth

Did you know that your cat needs to drink one ounce of water for every pound she weighs?  For instance, Carmine weighs 10 pounds.  That means he needs to drink 10 ounces of water each day in order to stay sufficiently hydrated.

When your cat doesn't drink enough water, he can become dehydrated.

An infographic explaining the advantages of pet fountains over traditional water bowls.

How do You Know When Your Cat is Dehydrated?

There are several warning signs that your cat may be dehydrated, including:

  • Dry and sticky gums.
  • Lack of energy.
  • Excessive, ongoing panting.
  • Vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Loss of skin elasticity - when the skin is pulled away or moved, it doesn't snap back to its original position.
  • Sunken, dry eyes.

July is Pet Hydration Month.

Tips for Keeping Your Cat Hydrated

There are several things you can do to encourage your cat to drink enough water.

  • Keep Water Away from the Food Bowl and Litter Box: Most cats don't like eating and drinking near their litter box.  Some cats don't like drinking near their food bowl, either.
  • Try Different Types of Water: Not all cats like drinking tap water.  Offer your cat different types of water in bowls or fountains throughout your home.  Try distilled, bottled, and tap water to see which type your cat prefers.
  • Feed Canned Food: Canned food contains much more moisture than dry food does.  To get even more water into your cat, you cant try adding a little water to her canned food.
  • Add Water to Dry Food: If your kitty won't eat canned food, try adding a little water to his dry food each day.  Start by adding just a little water to the food, and increase the amount over time as your cat acclimates to it.
  • Offer Clean Water: Clean, fresh water encourages cats to drink more.  One great way to ensure your cat has constant access to fresh clean water is to provide your cat with a pet fountain.

PetSafe® Brand Drinkwell®  Pagoda Pet Fountains Can Help Keep Your Cat Hydrated

I initially discovered how wonderful pet fountains are when Jewel developed kidney disease.  We quickly went from having one fountain to having three!  Not only did they encourage Jewel to drink, though, they also encouraged Carmine to drink more.  As many of you know, Carmine has had Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD) since he was four years old, and getting enough water is essential for helping keep crystals from forming.

We have been using PetSafe Brand pet fountains for the past four years and absolutely love them.  Some of the best features of the PetSafe Brand Drinkwell® Pagoda Pet Fountain include:

  • They are ceramic and easy to clean.  The fountain is dishwasher safe.
  • It's stylish.
  • The flowing water encourages your kitty to drink more.  The Drinkwell® Pagoda Pet Fountain continuously recirculates 70 ounces of water.
  • They effectively filter tap water.
  • The fountains are hygienic, low-maintenance, and prevent the growth of bacteria.
  • The Pagoda provides both upper and lower drinking dishes.  The upper drinking dish is great for pets who have arthritis.
What We Think About the PetSafe Brand Drinkwell® Pagoda Pet Fountain

I knew that Carmine loved his Pagoda fountain, but I didn't realize just how much he loves it until he had to do without it for a few days.  We just moved this past weekend, and Carmine had to do without his Pagoda fountain for a few days while I organized things in our new tiny space to make sufficient room for his new fountain.  I noticed right away that Carmine wasn't drinking much from the water bowls I had placed around our studio apartment.  I made getting his new Pagoda fountain set up a top priority, and once it was up and running, Carmine was thrilled!  He's back to drinking plenty of water now, and you can tell just how much he loves drinking from his Pagoda.

Carmine enjoys water from his new PetSafe Brand Drinkwell® Pagoda Pet Fountain.

Carmine always drinks from the upper dish.  Most fountains I've seen and used in the past don't offer an upper dish, and I love that the Pagoda does.  Carmine has arthritis, and I think it's much more comfortable for him to drink from the upper dish of the fountain.

Personally, I absolutely love the way the red fountain looks!  The Pagoda also comes in taupe, Himalayan blue, and white.  In my opinion, the fountain is easy to assemble and clean as well.

If you have a cat, I would definitely recommend the PetSafe Brand Drinkwell® Pagoda Pet Fountain.  I simply cannot say enough good things about this fountain and how great it's been for Carmine.

  5. It's hard to believe, but we don't have a fountain in our house. We really need to try one out, especially to help with UTI's. Purrs from Deb and the Zee/Zoey gang

  6. My cats absolutely love this fountain, and no longer have to drink from the water bowls they used to share with my three Treeing Walker Coonhounds. I had to change the water constantly to keep the dog slobber out of the cats' water! Add to that the beautiful style of this fountain - I used to have it on our kitchen table, but moved it to get use of the table back. Now it's on a counter in the bathroom, and since that room is decorated in blue and I was going with more of a spa feeling for it, my blue Pagoda fountain really adds to the feeling. Most pet fountains just don't enhance your decor, but this one does!
