(Almost) Wordless Wednesday

Milita is on my bed, trying to stay warm in this cold spell we are having in Colorado.  Yesterday, the temperature was only in the 40s, and today, the predicted high is 54.  We've been getting a ton of rain (and a little snow), too.  I can't believe it is the middle of May and still this cold out.

(Almost) Wordless Wednesday

Yesterday, I went to Cat Care Society to socialize the kitties.  I thought you all might like to see some of my kitty friends at the shelter.  I hope you enjoy the photos!

There were some really adorable kittens one of the CCS foster moms brought in for their vaccines.  I held this one for a little while.  She was very curious and kept trying to climb over my shouler to see out the window.  This kitten was in a litter of five, and they are all about six weeks old.

This handsome boy is Fritz.  He is one year old, active, and friendly.  He enjoyed getting some head scritches while he laid on this cart.

This beautiful girl is Cat Care's current Milita look-alike.  Her name is Gracie, and she's a lynx-point Siamese like Milita.  Like Milita, she is very friendly and loves affection, too.  Gracie is not currently available for adoption.

This handsome guy is very new to the shelter.  He is getting adjusted to the shelter and waiting to be placed in one of our rooms.  He is such a sweet boy!!  He wants someone to love so much.  He love getting head scritches and being pet.

This beautiful panther is Cairo.  She's been waiting for her forever home for quite some time now.  She is such a sweet senior kitty with so much love to give.  I always make a point of visiting her when I'm at the shelter.

And of course I could not visit the shelter without spending time with my sweet Mango!  She was hanging out on the dryer when I visited her the first time.  I gave her her dinner, and she ate all of it for me (what a good kitty!).

Before I left the shelter, I went to pet her again and found her on top of the cabinets in this box.  She loves her box way up high.  She can see everyone and every kitty from up there.

I was socializing some kitties yesterday at Cat Care Society, and this adorable seal-point Siamese kitten curled up in my lap for a while.

You can find this sweet kitten along with her sister (also a seal-point Siamese) in the Kitten Room at Cat Care Society.  They must be adopted together.

Last week, I was so tired after getting home from the dentist that I thought I'd have a little nap on the couch.  I saw Jewel on the floor and thought she might like to lay on the couch with me.  She ended up laying on my arm like this for quite a while.  It was so sweet.  I love her so much!

Tonight, she begged for the human dinner, which made me very happy since she hasn't been doing that much lately.  If you missed our update on Jewel, you can read it here.

As many of you know, yesterday was Milita's 11th birthday!  Thank you sooo much to everyone who wished her a Happy Birthday!!  I think she had a really great day :)

Words on Wednesday: Update on Jewel

Yesterday, I took Jewel to the vet for a follow-up regarding her blood pressure.  She's been on the Amlodipine for about a week and a half now.

We'll start with the good news, shall we?

Her blood pressure has gone back to NORMAL!!!  And her retinas are already 90% REATTACHED!!!!  Yay!!!  The vet wants to see her in 3-4 more weeks to make sure the medication continues to work.  Jewel has made that horrible howling/crying sound since late last week, either, so I figured things were on the right path where her blood pressure is concerned.

Jewel's legs, on the other hand, don't seem to be doing so well.  The vet says her back legs are very weak (and last potassium level was normal).  She suggested giving her some kind of injections......but I can't remember the name of them.  I know that her arthritis is advanced and severe, but I'm not sure what these injections are supposed to do exactly?  Carmine's going to the vet on Friday (but don't tell him that) so I'll ask more questions then.

Fortunately, thanks to a very sweet friend and his wonderful fur babies, I was able to restock all of Jewel's meds - and she was out of just about everything.  We appreciate it so very much!!

Jewel has lost 2.5 ounces in the past week and a half, which isn't good.  The vet suggested we try to give her a 1/4 Cyproheptadine twice a day instead of once.  I got her some different canned food yesterday, too.  The Fancy Feast usually goes over pretty well with her, so I got her some of that.  She's working on her favorite right now - the savory seafood one.  She hasn't been eating that much lately, so whatever she'll eat, I will go get for her.

Maybe some of you should come over and bring your favorite can of stinky goodness.  We could have a nomming party and remind Jewel how fun it is to eat all the stinkies!

Jewel: Sometimes, I like to hang out in my pink house (the Mom calls it a kitty cube).  Other times, I hang out in my green house.  These houses are quite comfy and make a good place for a nice long snooze.  And here's a bonus -- the humans have a hard time getting me out of here when they want to pill or poke me, MOL!

The Mom's friends gave her a set of three Yeoww! catnip balls as part of her birthday gift.  Carmine found them first, of course.  He seems to be able to hunt down the source of catnip, but can't find chicken when it's right under his nose (MOL!).  

I was so excited, I came out of the pink cube and almost *stole* Carmine's ball from him!  Thankfully, there are three so there's no need to fight over them. :)

Wordy Wednesday: To the Vet We Went

I know it's supposed to be Wordless Wednesday, but I didn't think anyone wanted to wait for an update about Jewel, so it's going to be a Wordy Wednesday, instead.

We ALL went to the vet, so I'll update you on the kitties in the order they were seen.

First up was Milita.  She weighs 12 pounds 5.5 ounces.  Surprisingly, the vet said she only needs to lose a half pound to not be overweight! :)  We've been putting her food up on the cat tree, and recently I got her a Neko fly, which she cannot resist.  It's providing good exercise for her.  I'll try to post pictures or a video of her playing with it soon.  It's adorable.

The vet said she may need her teeth cleaned in six months, but other than that, she is healthy.  She got her vaccines, and then a very grumpy kitty went back into her PTU.

Next, it was Jewel's turn.  If you haven't been reading Facebook, Jewel has been having problems with her right back leg for a few days.  She was limping on it and the leg felt floppy to me - it didn't have the tension her other back leg does.  When I moved her, she seemed to be in pain, and she couldn't make it from one place to another without sitting or laying down between.

Jewel weighed in at 9 pounds 3 ounces - which is UP from her last weigh in!  This is pretty rare for CRF cats, says our vet, so I am quite happy.  Jewel really loves the new Royal Canin s/o kibbles Carmine is prescribed.

They took her blood for her kidney levels and to measure electrolytes, but I won't know anything about the results until later.

The vet took her back into another room to examine her leg.  I could hear my little baby crying, and it was sad.  They took an x-ray of her leg, and nothing's broken.  The vet says she thinks Jewel has a soft tissue injury - probably from jumping off the cat tree or the bed.  The Cosequin made Jewel feel so good that she was eating kibbles on the cat tree for a few days (as you can see in the photo).

We have to keep her from jumping for a week and she is on pain medication.  It sounds like it should heal, which is good.  I just feel bad for her being in pain.

Carmine was last.  Boy was the vet glad to see him after Lita and Jewel!  Lita and Jewel aren't exactly the easiest patients to have, but Carmine is so cooperative.  He's like a little rag doll.

Carmine weighed in at 9 pound 0.5 ounces.  So he's up one ounce :)  We want him to get to at least 9 pounds, 6 ounces, so he has a little ways to go still.  The Cyproheptadine seems to be helping his appetite.  He got his vaccines and his B12 injection.

The vet is lowering Carmine's prednisone to one-half tablet in the morning and one-half tablet at night to see how he does on that.  He goes back in two weeks for another B12 injection and weigh in.

I'll update about Jewel's test results when I know what they are.

Thank you all so much for taking this journey with us.  Having special needs kitties is so very wonderful, but it does come with challenges, too.  I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world, though.  I love my babies SOOO MUCH!
