It's Our 17th Blogoversary and a Giveaway to Celebrate!

Me and Lita

Today is our 17th blogoversary! It's hard to believe that I started this blog 17 years ago.

When I began this blog in 2006, I was just dipping my toe into the writing waters. I had developed a chronic pain condition that year that left me unable to work a traditional job, and I was seeking a way to help support me and my kitties while I waited on the Social Security Administration to make a decision about my Disability case.

Carmine

At the time, I was writing for Associated Content (which later became Yahoo! Voices). I was researching more opportunities when I ran across people talking about blogs. A blog? What is that?!

After reading about them, I decided, what the heck, I'll try it! So, on December 15, 2006, Fur Everywhere was born. This was our first post.

How Old Are You: Poll

Earlier, I was reading about how a feline named Phoebe is the oldest cat in the world (currently) at the ripe old age of 25!  According to the article, domestic cats live on average 12-15 years.

My childhood kitty, Kitty (yes, her name was really Kitty), lived to be 18 years old.

Angel Emma

Emma lived to be 18 as well.

Jewel

And my sweet Jewel is going to be 16 in June!

Have I gotten lucky with cats who tend to live longer than average or are cats living longer these days, I wonder.

In any case, this inspired me to take a poll of our furriends.  We want to know: HOW OLD ARE YOU?

Leave us a comment by Wednesday April 16th, telling us how old you are, and we'll tabulate the results!  We'll report the results on Thursday April 17th.  Woofies as well as kitty friends are welcome to participate.  We will calculate separate results for woofies and kitties, so if you are a woofie, please let us know that in the comments, too.

We can't wait to see who is our oldest furriend and who is our youngest furriend!

Welcome Home, Emma!

Thank you so much to everyone who came by Carmine's party to celebrate with him and to wish him a Happy Birthday!!  He had a good time :)

Jewel Update: I got Jewel a few different brands of canned noms at PetSmart this weekend.  We are about to finish up a can of Natural Choice.  She hasn't eaten much more of this kind than she was eating of Friskies, though. :(  I will keep trying the different brands, but I'm going to call the vet this week to ask her about the prescription a/d.  Jewel needs to eat more of something!

We has a bit of good news, too.  We got our VSquillion today!!! :)

After Emma ran off to the Bridge, Carmine had a particularly hard time; he grieved for quite a while (one of the many, many, many reasons I love him is that he's such a sensitive boy!).

So, when we saw the Cat Blogosphere shelter had Rainbow Bridge VSquillions for adoption, we knew we had to give our sweet angel Emma a home on our bloggie.

Welcome home, Angel Emma!

Ideas?

Carmine has been acting out behaviorally ever since Emma passed away. He walks around and cries ("talks") a lot, he bothers Milita more often than he used to by stealing her bed and by antagonizing her until she hisses and/or growls. He will back her into corners and won't let her get out.

Sometimes he also is very insistent about waking me up at night by kneading my face or meowing incessantly.

I have tried to give him extra attention and to lay in my lap more often. I have tried to pet him more than usual.

Sometimes, when he is being really naughty to Milita, I put him in "time out" in the bathroom for a little bit so he calms down.

But none of this seems to be helping and I'm not sure what else to do. I know I'm supposed to be the cat "expert" here, but I've never had a grieving cat before and I'm at a loss as to what to do. Any ideas?

A Tribute to Emma

Emma passed away about three weeks ago.

Emma was an unforgettable cat. I remember being anxious that she wouldn’t like me before she and her owner (my ex-fiancé) moved here. I carried her in from the cab. Then, she was just this weight I had on my shoulder, but little did I know how much of an impact Emma would have on my life or Carmine’s or Milita’s.

Dave took Emma out of her carrier in my bedroom where she could get used to her new home without having to cope with new cat friends at the same time. Emma seemed to take to me right away! She immediately let me pet her and declared her happiness with her special “ra-ows!”

Soon after, she met her new sister and brother who were very curious about Emma. Carmine delighted in chasing Emma up and down the hall, and she seemed to like it, too.

Milita wasn’t quite as thrilled with Emma’s presence as Carmine appeared to be. Emma appeared to scare Milita for the first several months she was here. But eventually, Milita became accustomed to having a new sister. She even grew to swatting Emma playfully as she walked by.

Dave informed me that Emma had kidney disease right away. She required a special diet, one Carmine and Milita delighted in as well. Though they stole her food, sometimes aggressively, you could tell that both of them cared about Emma, especially toward the end of her life.

What I remember most about Emma is the way she vocalized. It was a very unique sound – a sort of broken meow. I always knew when she was near or wanted something from me.

There was one time that I was feeling very sick and I was laying on the floor. No one was home with me, except my cats. Emma came by and let me know she was there with a “ra-ow!” Even though I didn’t make any move to show her affection, she just sat there right by me on the floor until I felt well enough to go about my day again.

Emma used to steal my brushes to rub her face on. There was one time I couldn’t find any of my brushes to brush my hair, and Dave ended up finding it in the corner of the living room Emma used to love being in. After that, we made sure there was a brush available for her.

Emma’s kidneys failed her quickly in the end. I noticed a change in her right away.

When Dave decided it was time for Emma to rest, Emma seemed to be more at peace.

The morning we took her in, we gave her her favorite treats: tuna, cats treats, lots of love, songs, petting, and stories. I don’t know if Carmine and Milita understood at the time, but I tried to explain to them that Emma had to go away for a while and I gave them a chance to say good-bye to the sister they had grown to love.

I believe that Emma lived a long, happy life, and I’m glad I was able to contribute to her happiness in her last two years with us. I believe that her spirit will always remain among those who had the opportunity to love her.

Emma has kidney trouble. She's 18 so that can be expected at her age. But she's not been feeling well lately. She's losing more weight and hasn't had much of an appetite the past day or two. It could be that she's just having a rough couple of days, but I'd really appreciate any good vibes or prayers all of you other wonderful cats and cat owners can offer up for her.

In other news, I am feeling much better. Carmine and Milita took exceptionally good care of me when I was sick last week. Cat medicine truly is the best medicine :)

Feeding Time!

We have started to feed Emma more of the Fancy Feast wet food lately. It seems like it helps her spirit. But now, every time Dave or I walk into the kitchen, all the cats come trotting in right behind us! They sit and beg and look pitiful until we give them some a lot of times. It's pretty cute and amusing.
I never knew cats could accidentally be classically conditioned!
